Hi everyone-
Welcome to Vermont!!
I am very excited about getting this program and blog started!
Contributors: please begin by posting a brief introduction. What are your hobbies and interests? Why are you participating in this exchange? What would you like to share about your home region? Over the next week, please post images of housing and the environment in your home region.
I have e-mailed each of you a list of potential research topics separately. Please begin a dialogue with each other about the topics that interest you most. You will be asked to work in pairs to make sense of just one of these topics during our program next month.
My background: I am the Executive Director of Green Across the Pacific (GATP). We organize and implement Environmental Leadership Exchange Programs, primarily in North America and Asia. I have a background in biology and education. I taught in public and private high schools for 20 years. I founded GATP in 2000, and now work both for GATP and Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. My wife and I are raising two boys. One is a sophomore at the University of Vermont, and the other is a freshman at our local high school. In addition to my work, I enjoy music, reading, biking, cross-country skiing, gardening and cooking.
I'm really looking forward to working with all of you!

I have two topics that I am very interested in. The first topic is rubbish disposal. I'm trying really hard to get my family and community aware of the wastes they are producing and the effect that their waste has on the environment. By researching this topic, I beleive I would be able to use information to help convince my community that carelessly throwing out trash can have a monumental effect on the environment and on many people's lives.
The next topic I am interested in is Management of Threatened Species. I have a great passion for animals as well as a keen interest in the study of wildlife conservation. I even beleive that I may have a specific story that could be researched and presented. In the town of Irasburg, Vermont (only about 5 minutes from where I live), a man took in an injured Moose that could no longer survive on its own. After being nursed to health, Pete the moose was transported to a game reserve with other deer and moose. Pete is given animal feed as part of is diet and because of this the fish and wildlife department has threatened to humanly uthenize him in order to be sure that diseases are not contracted. Soon after, the whole town became involved in the controversy. I find this story to be really interesting and a good way to show how the management of threatened species is relevant even in people's home towns. To see the offical website on Pete the Moose you can follow this link: http://www.savepetethemoose.org/
I can't wait to hear about what other topics people are interested in!
